CrushOn AI Anime Characters: How Good Are They Really? (I Tested 5)

I ran five anime characters on CrushOn AI and tracked personality, memory, album images and credit burn. The short version: good writing, fragile memory, no on-demand anime art.

Illustrated anime-style companion characters on floating chat cards around a glowing smartphone

Key takeaways

  • CrushOn AI's anime characters are good for short and mid-length unfiltered roleplay, as long as you pick a well-written card. Card quality matters more than the platform.
  • Memory is the weak spot: 8K context on the free model, 16K on paid. My characters started losing planted details somewhere between message 20 and 40.
  • There is no on-demand image generation in my 2026 account. Anime pictures come from creator-made albums that unlock during chat, and some cost Diamonds.
  • Pricing runs on credits that count both your message and the reply. Standard ($5.99) suits casual use; past Premium ($14.99), other apps give anime fans more for the money.
  • If you want to actually see your anime companion, Joi AI and Candy AI generate images in chat.

CrushOn AI's anime characters are better than their reputation in one way and worse in two. I ran five of them for a week (a tsundere, a kuudere, a yandere, a genki girl and an onee-san, all written as adults) and logged every credit. The personalities can be excellent if the card is well written. Memory gets shaky after a few dozen messages. And in 2026 you can't ask CrushOn to draw your waifu: the anime images come from albums the creator uploaded.

Most CrushOn reviews call it "great for anime" without checking whether the characters stay in character, remember you, or send pictures. That's what I tested.

Quick verdict: CrushOn AI is a solid pick for short, unfiltered anime roleplay with community characters, and a weak one for long storylines or anyone who wants generated art. My scores: Personality 8/10, Memory 5/10, Visuals 5/10, Value 6/10, Privacy 4/10. Overall 6.5/10. If you want real in-chat anime images, Joi AI or Candy AI are the better buys.

CrushOn isn't in the table because it's the product under review. The biggest difference: the five main apps above can generate a picture of your character on request, and CrushOn can't.

What Are CrushOn AI's Anime Characters?

CrushOn AI's anime characters are community-made chatbot personas with anime-style avatars and personalities, from original waifus to fan versions of anime heroines written as adults. You chat with them in unfiltered text roleplay on crushon.ai, on the free model or a paid one.

Users make almost all of them, which is why size estimates range from a few thousand to several hundred thousand. "Tens of thousands" is the safe description. DreamGen's reviewer called the library "almost exclusively anime-themed," which matches what I saw. There's an Anime category in browse, and most top cards elsewhere are drawn in anime style anyway. Since anyone can publish, quality swings from careful scenario writing to one line and a borrowed picture.

One rule before anything else. Many canon anime characters are minors, or adults drawn to look young. Skip those bots and pick cards that clearly state an adult age and setting. Adult characters with a real backstory are usually written better anyway.

How I Tested CrushOn's Anime Characters

I tested over seven days in October 2026, using the same method I use for every character platform (it's described on our methodology page). I screened the top 20 cards in the Anime category with a short vibe test first, then picked five for long runs.

  • Accounts: one free account, then a Standard plan, with a Premium month for the Pro model comparison.
  • Characters: five archetypes from the top results of the Anime category, every card stating an adult age: a tsundere coworker, a kuudere librarian, a yandere former college rival in her late twenties, a genki gym instructor, and an onee-san café owner. I also ran an aged-up fan bot of an adult swordswoman from a fantasy series for the canon comparison.
  • Length: 30 to 50 messages per character. That's shorter than my usual 100-message scenes, because memory had clearly slipped by message 30 and longer runs added little.
  • Memory check: at message 5 I planted a detail (my cat's name and that I hate coffee). I checked recall at messages 15 and 30.
  • Models: each character ran on the free default (Crushon Leo 8K) first, then on a Pro model from the selector.

Personality: Do They Actually Feel Like Anime Characters?

Mostly, yes. The best CrushOn cards understand anime speech patterns well. The weaker ones go generic within ten messages.

Archetype Results

Tsundere coworker. The strongest of the five. The card had example dialogue showing the "it's not like I did this for you" deflection, and the bot used that rhythm without repeating it word for word. Around message 25 she softened too fast, dropping the deflection entirely. A short out-of-character note fixed it.

Kuudere librarian. Short, flat replies, right for a kuudere, though on the free model they got too short to move the scene. The Pro model kept the cool tone and added small actions (closing a book, adjusting glasses), which made a big difference.

Yandere former rival. The card leaned on possessive jealousy, and the bot played it as playful and theatrical. It stayed in register longer than I expected, though it occasionally jumped from mild to intense with nothing in between.

Genki gym instructor. Lots of exclamation points and energy, as you'd want. She was the first to forget my planted detail. By message 15 she was offering me coffee.

Onee-san café owner. Warm, teasing, and the most natural writing in the set. She was also the bot most likely to drift flirty. Other testers report the same: even SFW-leaning cards turn romantic quickly.

Canon-Inspired vs Original Characters

The adult swordswoman fan bot sounded right for about ten messages, then turned into a generic fantasy heroine, because the card relied on the model already knowing her. Originals with detailed cards held up better, a pattern CallYourGirlfriend and Robo Rhythms also reported.

The Card Matters More Than the Platform

Every bot that held up had a short trait list, a scenario greeting, and two or three example lines in the character's voice. Every bot that fell apart early lacked one of them, and the model filled the gap with a default "flirty anime girl" voice. I saw the same thing when vetting SpicyChat goth girl characters.

Consistency Scorecard

Character Stayed in character Planted detail at msg 15 Planted detail at msg 30 Drift notes
Tsundere coworker About 25 msgs, then softened Yes Partly (cat yes, coffee no) Fixed with one OOC note
Kuudere librarian Whole session Yes No Free model got too terse
Yandere former rival Most of the session Yes No Intensity jumps
Genki gym instructor Whole session No No Lost details first
Onee-san café owner About 20 msgs, then flirty Yes Yes (Pro model) Romance drift
Adult swordswoman (fan bot) About 10 msgs Yes No Went generic

Memory and Consistency in Long Anime Roleplay

This is where CrushOn struggles. The free model works with roughly 8K of context, and the paid models offer roughly 16K. On the free plan, chat history is also deleted after seven days of inactivity, so a slow-burn storyline you leave for a week can disappear.

My results sit in the middle of other tests. DreamGen saw two of three scenarios fall apart before message 20 in February 2026; Robo Rhythms puts drift at around 100 messages; AI Companion Guides reported recall from 100+ messages back. In April 2026 paying users also reported memory resets on Pro models, with no official response I could find.

In my runs, details planted at message 5 were mostly still there at message 15 and mostly gone by message 30. The Pro model clearly did better (the onee-san still knew I hate coffee at message 30), but it still drifted.

What helped:

  • A one-line out-of-character recap every 15 messages or so: "(OOC: remember, my cat is Miso and I don't drink coffee)".
  • Keeping the persona to three or four core traits. Long trait lists get diluted fastest.
  • Starting a fresh chat for a new story arc instead of stretching one thread over weeks.
  • Switching to a Pro model for long arcs, if your plan covers it.

Anime Art and Images: What You Actually Get

Album Images vs Image Generation

CrushOn AI doesn't generate images on request in my 2026 account. When I asked the tsundere for a selfie, she answered in character and nothing appeared. CallYourGirlfriend got an even blunter reply: "I am not able to generate images."

The images come from albums. Each character's creator can upload a set of pictures, which unlock when certain topics come up in the conversation. Some album images are locked and cost Diamonds, one of CrushOn's currencies. Robo Rhythms, CallYourGirlfriend and DreamGen all describe the same album-only setup in their 2026 tests.

Older reviews still list "image generation" because CrushOn experimented with it at one point. In my account it was albums only.

Why Anime Characters Look More Consistent

Albums have one advantage for anime fans. CallYourGirlfriend noticed that anime-style characters keep their look across album images much better than realistic ones, whose faces change from picture to picture. I saw the same: the onee-san's album looked like one character by one artist, while two realistic bots I checked looked like different women in every shot.

Album quality depends on the creator. Three of my five characters had albums, and only two were worth unlocking.

If You Want to Generate Anime Pics Mid-Chat

Then you need a different app. Candy AI, OurDream AI, Nectar AI and Joi AI generate images inside the chat, with anime looks available. SpicyChat offers an Anime style for conversation images on its $19.95 and $29.95 tiers.

CrushOn AI Pricing for Anime Fans (2026)

CrushOn runs on monthly credits. These tiers match the September 2026 Robo Rhythms snapshot and CallYourGirlfriend's May 2026 test:

Plan Price/month Credits/month What that means for anime RP
Free $0 100 A short taste; your message and the reply both spend credits
Standard $5.99 2,000 A few relaxed sessions a week
Premium $14.99 6,000 Near-daily roleplay on the default model
Luxe $39.99 20,000 Heavy daily use or regular Pro models
Elite $89.99 55,000 Power users
Imperial $199.99 125,000 Hard to justify for chat alone

Standard and Premium are cheaper on yearly billing ($58.88 and $94.88 a year).

  • Credits count both your message and the bot's reply.
  • Regenerating or continuing a reply costs double, so rerolling burns credits fast.
  • Pro models cost more per message. There's a separate Pro Models package, and sources disagree on its price (anywhere from $39.99 to $49.99 depending on your base plan), so check it in your account.
  • Credit packs run from 1,000 credits for $6 to 18,000 for $50. Message credits, Pro credits, Coins and Diamonds are four separate currencies; daily check-ins give free coins.

The old Deluxe plan ($49.90, sold as "unlimited") is retired, even though many reviews still list it.

My advice: Standard for casual use, Premium if you roleplay most days. Premium already costs about what Joi's monthly plan does, and above it you pay more than Joi or Candy without getting image generation, so those apps give anime fans more for the money. Our full CrushOn AI review covers the plans for general use.

How to Find (or Build) a Good Anime Character on CrushOn

Search on CrushOn is weak, and popularity doesn't equal quality. Here's the routine I use:

  1. Open the Anime category and sort by popular, then check the recent comments and ratings. Old hits are sometimes coasting.
  2. Read the card before you chat. Look for a stated adult age, a concrete personality, and a scenario greeting. Skip one-line cards.
  3. Check for an album if you care about visuals. No album means no pictures at all.
  4. Run a ten-message vibe test. If the voice is generic by message ten, it won't improve at fifty.
  5. Or build your own. Upload an image, write a short personality, a greeting and two or three example lines in the archetype's speech style. Keep the core persona under about 300 characters with three or four traits.

Here's a tight tsundere card that held up well in my test:

Name: Rin Asakura, 26 Personality: proud, competitive, secretly caring, hates admitting mistakes Scenario: You and Rin are rival project leads at a Tokyo design agency, stuck late on the same deadline. Example lines: "I-I only stayed because the deadline matters. Not because of you." / "Fine. Your idea was... acceptable. Don't let it go to your head."

Two greetings that set the scene well:

  • "You're still here? Tch. Don't think I'm staying to keep you company. Move over, your slides are a mess."
  • "Here. I bought two coffees by mistake. Don't read into it." (Change this one if your user persona hates coffee, like mine.)

CrushOn AI vs SpicyChat vs Character AI for Anime

CrushOn AI SpicyChat AI Character AI
Content filter Unfiltered for verified adults Unfiltered for verified adults SFW-filtered
Memory/context ~8K free, ~16K paid 4K free, 8K up to 32K paid Not published
Anime images Creator albums only Generated, Anime style on $19.95+ tiers Not a focus
Paid entry price $5.99/mo $5.95/mo Optional subscription
Library Community, anime-heavy Community, very large Community, fandom-heavy

SpicyChat's higher tiers win on memory and generated anime images; CrushOn matches it on entry price and card writing. Character AI's filter rules it out for adult roleplay. Our SpicyChat AI review has more.

Is CrushOn AI Safe? The Privacy Question

Mozilla's Privacy Not Included project gave CrushOn its warning label. Its test found 45 trackers in the first minute of use, DoubleClick among them, and a privacy policy that mentions health data 23 times. That test was done in February 2024, so some details may have changed, but I found no sign that the label has been removed.

Trustpilot has only about 20 reviews, averaging around 2 out of 5, with complaints about charges after cancellation. App store ratings are higher (4.6 on iOS, 4.3 on Google Play). Age verification is also inconsistent: some reviewers describe ID or selfie checks, others just a checkbox.

What I'd do:

  • Sign up with a separate email.
  • Keep real names, locations and workplace details out of your roleplay.
  • Find the cancellation path before you pay, and set a reminder before renewal.

Best CrushOn AI Alternatives for Anime Characters

Here's what I'd use instead, and why. For a wider list, see our guide to the best AI anime girlfriend apps.

1. Joi AI: best for anime-style roleplay with images and video

Joi AI logo
#1Joi AI9.5

AI companion & roleplay chat

Best for: Anime-style roleplay with images and video

Joi pairs strong roleplay writing with a character builder, in-chat images and video calls, which covers the two things CrushOn's anime bots can't do: hold a persona over a long arc and show you the character on request.

Joi AI interface screenshot
  • Persona holds over long scenes
  • Images and video calls in chat
  • Builder lets you set an anime-style look
  • No dedicated anime category
  • Photos, video and calls cost Neurons on top of Premium
Try Joi AI free From about $14/mo (varies by region) · Free plan: short messages (115-character cap)

Joi solves both of my main problems with CrushOn. I built an anime-style persona (a sarcastic adult game streamer) and ran my usual planted-detail check. She held her voice and my details noticeably better than the CrushOn bots, and she generated a picture of herself when I asked. It also does video calls. The honest downside: Joi has no dedicated anime category. Its premade cast is organized by personality (streamer, gamer, K-pop types), so for a strongly anime look you'll mostly build your own. Premium runs about $14 a month (one October 2026 US checkout showed $13.99; earlier in 2026 reviewers saw $16.79 to $17.77), prices vary by region, and photos, video and calls cost Neurons on top.

2. Candy AI: best for anime girlfriends with in-chat images

Candy AI logo
#2Candy AI9.2

AI girlfriend builder with images & voice

Best for: Anime girlfriends with in-chat images

Candy splits its premade companions into realistic and anime, and the builder has a proper anime style. Ask for a picture mid-chat and it generates one in that style.

Candy AI interface screenshot
  • Dedicated anime section
  • Image generation on request
  • Voice and video features
  • Tokens for images run out fast
  • Smaller library than CrushOn
Try Candy AI From $3.99/mo yearly ($13.99 monthly) · Free plan: a few messages and one image

Candy is the easiest switch for anime fans. Premade companions are split into realistic and anime, and the builder has a proper anime art style. Ask for a picture mid-scene and you get one in the character's style, which is exactly what CrushOn lacks. Voice and video run on tokens too. The catch is that the 100 monthly tokens go fast if you generate many images, and the library is a curated roster of 140-plus characters, not tens of thousands. At $3.99 a month on the yearly plan ($13.99 month to month), it costs far less than CrushOn's Premium.

3. Lovescape: best for a custom anime-styled romantic partner

Lovescape logo
#3Lovescape9.0

Custom AI companion creator

Best for: Custom anime-styled romantic partner

Lovescape's builder offers an anime style right on the first screen, and the romance-first chat design suits slow-burn waifu storylines better than CrushOn's scenario bots.

Lovescape interface screenshot
  • Anime style built into the creator
  • Images, video and voice messages on Premium
  • Text chat doesn't spend chips
  • Chat depth is lighter than Joi
  • Cross-chat memory only on the $64.99 Creative Pro tier
Build an anime companion From $7.99/mo yearly ($19.99 monthly) · Free plan: browse and basic text chat

Lovescape's creator offers anime as a style on the first screen, so you get an anime partner without fighting defaults. It's built around romance, which suits a slow-burn waifu storyline better than CrushOn's scenario bots. Premium ($19.99 a month, or $7.99 a month billed yearly) adds images, video and voice messages from a 600-chip allowance, while text chat costs no chips. Memory that carries across separate chats is reserved for Creative Pro at $64.99 a month; my colleague Jade explains how to live with that limit in her Lovescape memory tier breakdown. In my use, the chat writing felt lighter than Joi's or a top CrushOn card, so it's better for romance than for complex plots.

4. OurDream AI: best for anime images and short videos from chat

OurDream AI logo
#4OurDream AI8.8

AI character, image & video generator

Best for: Anime images and short videos from chat

OurDream generates images and short video clips from inside the conversation, in realistic or anime looks. It is the most visual option here.

OurDream AI interface screenshot
  • Anime or realistic companions
  • Video clips generated from chat
  • Large voice selection
  • DreamCoins drain on video
  • Chat writing trails Joi
Try OurDream AI From $9.99/mo yearly ($19.99 monthly) · Free: 55 one-time DreamCoins

If you're mainly here for visuals, OurDream is the strongest option. You can build a realistic or an anime companion, and it generates both images and short video clips from inside the chat, which CrushOn's albums can't match. The chat writing is good, though less sharp than Joi's, and video generation eats DreamCoins quickly. Plans cost $19.99 a month or $9.99 a month billed yearly, with 1,000 DreamCoins a month; the free account gets 55 coins once, enough for a short trial.

5. Nectar AI: best for slider-built anime looks and long-term memory

Nectar AI logo
#5Nectar AI8.6

Realistic AI companion with photos

Best for: Slider-built anime looks and long-term memory

Nectar's builder covers realistic and anime faces, and its top tier adds long-term memory, which fixes the exact problem I had with CrushOn's 30-message drift.

Nectar AI interface screenshot
  • Anime option in the builder
  • Long-term memory on Ultimate
  • Several chat models
  • HD images and memory sit on higher tiers
  • Tight free limit
Try Nectar AI From about $9.99/mo · Free plan: a small daily message allowance

Nectar's builder handles realistic and anime faces, and its top Ultimate tier adds long-term memory, the feature that would have saved my genki instructor from offering me coffee. HD images sit on the Pro tier, so the cheapest plan is mainly a chat plan. Third-party reviews list Premium at $9.99, Pro at $19.99 and Ultimate at $34.99 a month. The free plan gives a small daily allowance (reported at 15 messages), enough to judge the writing but not to run a real scene.

6. Hentai AI Chat: best for anime-only roleplay, no account

Hentai AI Chat logo
#6Hentai AI Chat8.3

Anime character roleplay chat

Best for: Anime-only roleplay, no account

An anime-only chat site: 15 adult anime personas, each with its own voice, uncensored by default and no sign-up. It's text-first; image requests hand off to Lovescape.

Hentai AI Chat interface screenshot
  • Every persona is anime
  • No sign-up or credits
  • Private sessions
  • 15 personas, not thousands
  • No built-in image generation
Open Hentai AI Chat Free to start · Free, no account needed

It's the opposite of CrushOn's endless library: fifteen adult anime personas, each with a distinct voice, uncensored by default, with no account or credits. It skips the sign-up and the currency math. It's text-first: there's no built-in image generator, and image requests hand you off to Lovescape. Memory holds the tone through a session, but it's not a long-term relationship app.

7. AI Goth Girl Chat: best for anime-goth crossover characters

AI Goth Girl Chat logo
#7AI Goth Girl Chat8.0

Goth-only AI girlfriend chat & image generator

Best for: Anime-goth crossover characters

One of its four persona styles is Anime Goth Fusion, and unlike CrushOn it has a built-in image generator you can use mid-chat.

AI Goth Girl Chat interface screenshot
  • Anime Goth Fusion personas
  • Custom image generator in chat
  • Memory across sessions
  • Goth-only roster
  • Narrow niche if goth isn't your thing
Try AI Goth Girl Chat Free to start · Free preview, no sign-up

A niche pick. It has 40+ goth companions in four styles, one of which is Anime Goth Fusion. Unlike CrushOn, there's a custom image generator you can use mid-chat, so you can actually see the character. Memory carries mood and relationship dynamics across sessions, and you don't need to sign up to start. If goth isn't your style, skip it. Our AI Goth Girl Chat review has the full breakdown.

Pros and Cons

What CrushOn AI does well for anime fans

  • Unfiltered roleplay for verified adults
  • A huge, mostly anime community library
  • Model selector with free and Pro options
  • Group chats with several characters
  • Cheap $5.99 entry plan

Where it falls short

  • No on-demand image generation, only creator albums
  • Memory drift in long scenes
  • Confusing credits, with double cost for regenerations
  • Weak search and uneven card quality
  • A poor privacy record

Final Verdict: How Good Are CrushOn's Anime Characters Really?

With a well-written card, CrushOn's anime characters are very good. My tsundere coworker and onee-san café owner had some of the best anime-style dialogue I've seen on an unfiltered platform. Trouble starts when the scene gets long, when you want to see the character, or when you add up what credits buy.

It's worth it for short and mid-length anime roleplay if you pick cards carefully and stay on Standard or Premium. It's not worth it for long storylines or for anyone who wants to generate images of their waifu.

My score: 6.5/10 for anime characters. For roleplay that holds up and shows you the character, try Joi AI. For anime images first, try Candy AI. For more options, see our list of NSFW AI girlfriend apps.

Frequently asked questions

Is CrushOn AI good for anime roleplay?

Yes, for short and mid-length unfiltered scenes. The library is mostly anime, and the best community cards write convincing tsundere, kuudere or onee-san voices. Quality depends almost entirely on the card, so test a bot for ten messages before you commit. Long arcs are the weak point, because memory starts slipping after a few dozen messages.

Does CrushOn AI generate anime images?

Not on request, in my 2026 testing. Images come from albums that each character's creator uploads, and they unlock as certain topics come up in chat. Some album pictures are locked behind Diamonds. If you want to generate anime pictures mid-chat, Joi AI, Candy AI, OurDream AI and Nectar AI all do it.

How good is CrushOn AI's memory?

It's the platform's biggest weakness. The free model works with about 8K of context and paid models with about 16K. Independent tests report drift anywhere from message 20 to around message 100, and in my runs planted details faded between 20 and 40 messages. Short out-of-character recaps every 15 messages help a lot.

How much does CrushOn AI cost?

There's a free plan with 100 credits a month. Paid plans are Standard at $5.99, Premium at $14.99, Luxe at $39.99, Elite at $89.99 and Imperial at $199.99 a month. Credits cover both your message and the reply, and regenerating costs double. The old $49.90 Deluxe unlimited plan has been retired.

Can I chat with popular anime characters on CrushOn?

Fan-made bots based on anime characters exist, made by the community rather than licensed. Only use characters written as adults. Quality swings a lot from creator to creator, and in my tests well-written original characters stayed in character longer than most fan versions of canon heroines.

Can I create my own anime character on CrushOn?

Yes. You upload an image, write a personality, a scenario and a greeting, and you can add example dialogue. Keep the core persona short, around three or four traits, and use the example lines to teach the speech style. Tight cards drift less than long ones.

Is CrushOn AI safe to use?

Mozilla's Privacy Not Included guide gave CrushOn a warning label after finding 45 trackers in its first test, though that test dates from February 2024. Use a separate email, don't share real personal details in chat, and check how to cancel before you subscribe, since some users report billing trouble.

What's the best CrushOn alternative for anime characters?

Joi AI is my overall pick for anime-style roleplay with images and video. Candy AI is the best choice if in-chat anime images matter most. If you want a free, anime-only site with no account, try Hentai AI Chat.
